Review sites are sprouting up all around the net at a speed which is hard to keep up with. How can this be the case? Is there money to be gotten from them or are the creators making these sites up for altruistic reasons?

In a nutshell, there are lots of them because it’s very good for business. Whatever type of business you are in, these review sites are becoming an ever more important part of your marketing tactics. We are living in a world which is getting ever more distracting through a massive array of choice put forth to us daily.

We as a consumerist society just do not have enough time to methodically research the purchase choices we want to make and as a direct result we need to make shortcuts in our decision making process.

Think about the last hight price item you bought. Did you pull out the credit card on the spur of the moment and make a buy. I doubt it – I’m betting you probably probed your friends and neighbours to solicit their advice and see if they had already bought the item in question.

You were looking for their advice and their opinions count.

Whether you like it or not, we are all very similar when it comes to this buying decision making process. We are in essence a “marketing herd” and are persuaded by other peoples outlook – even the opinions of total strangers!

There are review websites on pretty much every conceivable subject known to us, from cause related marketing all the way through to the best kinds of plants you should buy. You can perform a quick search on any search engine and you are pretty much assured to find some useful reviews in short order.

Does this mean you blindly trust all the reviews you come across? Of course not. There are plenty of people out there submitting reviews with their own agendas. You must not put faith chiefly on the say-so of a single review. Instead, you need to put the review in context, try to get some more reviews (maybe put in some more searches with keywords like “scam” for example to find some alternative points of view.

Review sites work, have worked and will continue to work because they offer us the seductive promise of discovering useful information about things we are interested in and protecting the most valuaeable resource we have – time.
